Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is Art Therapy?
A: Art therapy utilizes the creative process to provide a therapeutic and safe healing space. Art therapists are trained in both counseling and art therapy and can utilize both techniques in session. A variety of media is utilized in art therapy and art therapists are trained to meet the client where they are in their creative self-exploration and healing process.
Q: What does Art-Play Therapy for children look like?
A: My sessions with children often start with a “check in” at the beginning. After the verbal check in, the child-led art-play therapy can begin. My office provides a space for activities such as sand tray, imaginative play, and games. Sometimes, the art or play therapy session is directed and other times it is fully child-directed play that I can support and witness.
Q: What kind of materials are used in art therapy?
A: All kinds of materials are used in art therapy. As an art therapist, I have personal experience with many materials and methods. I am also always up for learning something creative and new!
Q: Is art therapy just for children?
A: No! Art therapy is for all ages. The way in which the art therapy session is structured is tailored to your personal development and unique individual needs. Everyone has the ability and need to be creative and you do not have to be an “artist”. In art therapy, we are all about the process and not there to critique your creations.
Q: What is your background and experience in art therapy?
A: I have been working as an art therapist and counselor in private practice for over 8 years. Before that, I worked as an in-home therapist and on an inpatient unit at a local hospital. I graduated with my Masters in Art Therapy and Counseling from the George Washington University in 2012. Since then, I have attended numerous trainings to keep up with current art therapy and counseling practice in the areas of play therapy, art therapy, trauma, and postpartum therapeutic care.
Q: What can I expect when I reach out?
A: When you first reach out, we will set up a free 15 minute phone consultation. During this consultation, I will introduce myself and you can see if my services would be a good fit for your personal needs.
Q: Do you take insurance?
A: At this time, I am out of network for all insurance providers. You will receive a “Superbill” every month that can be submitted to your insurance company. I recommend calling ahead of time to see if your plan will reimburse out of network services.
Q: What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
A: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are closely related and interconnected. CBT is a therapeutic technique where coping strategies and techniques can be established that challenged unhelpful thoughts and replace them with helpful thoughts. I often incorporate my CBT training in my art and play therapy as well by using concrete, visual strategies.
Q: Where are you located?
A: My office is located in the Borough of Narberth in Pennsylvania. The street address is 117 Forrest Ave, Narberth, PA 19072. There is ample (metered) street parking out in front of the building or plenty of unmetered residential parking nearby. The office is located down the block from the Narberth R5 train station, connecting it to Philadelphia and the more Western suburbs. Narberth is a vibrant, lively, and creative community full of restaurants, shops, cafes, and parks to explore.
